Stroke & Neurological Rehabilitation
Stroke and neurological rehabilitation focuses on functional impairments resulting from stroke and certain neurological conditions. Common concerns include weakness of the arms or legs, abnormal muscle tone, reduced mobility, and difficulty walking. The TCM practitioner will assess the patient’s stage of recovery, symptoms, and functional status, and develop an individualized acupuncture and TCM treatment plan.
Common Symptoms & Conditions
Stroke & Neurological Rehabilitation
After a stroke, the degree of impairment and the functions affected can vary significantly from one patient to another. Some patients may experience weakness on one side of the body, reduced mobility or coordination, changes in muscle tone, or difficulty walking. Facial function, speech, swallowing, sensation, or other neurological functions may also be affected.
Rehabilitation needs depend on the patient’s current stage of recovery and functional limitations. The TCM practitioner will review when the stroke occurred, current symptoms, previous treatments, and rehabilitation progress, and will develop an appropriate treatment plan alongside the patient’s existing medical and rehabilitation care.
Common Reasons Patients Seek Treatment
Patients may seek treatment for stroke-related or neurological functional concerns such as:
Weakness of the arms or legs after stroke
Reduced mobility or coordination of the upper or lower limbs
Increased muscle tone, tightness, or spasticity
Difficulty with hand function or fine motor movements
Impaired walking, balance, or mobility
Facial dysfunction after stroke
Numbness or altered sensation
Other persistent functional impairments following stroke
Neurological conditions can have different causes and require different approaches to treatment. If new or sudden neurological symptoms occur, patients should seek appropriate emergency medical assessment immediately rather than waiting for TCM treatment.
How TCM Assesses Post-Stroke Function
During the consultation, the TCM practitioner will review when the stroke occurred, the areas affected, the patient’s current level of recovery, and any ongoing medical or rehabilitation treatment.
Depending on the individual situation, the assessment may also consider upper and lower limb movement, muscle tone, joint mobility, walking ability, and daily functional activities. This helps identify the main functional problems that currently require attention and guides the treatment approach.
Because functional ability may continue to change throughout different stages of stroke recovery, the treatment plan may also be adjusted according to the patient’s rehabilitation progress and response to treatment.
Treatment Approach
Acupuncture is one of the commonly used TCM treatment approaches in stroke and neurological rehabilitation. Depending on the patient’s individual condition and treatment needs, other appropriate TCM therapies may also be incorporated.
Treatment goals are based on the patient’s current functional impairments and rehabilitation needs and are intended to work alongside existing care provided by physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and other rehabilitation professionals.
TCM treatment should not replace the conventional medical care and rehabilitation services required after a stroke.
